New weight loss procedure seeks FDA approval
While many people turn to cosmetic surgery procedures such as liposuction, body contouring and breast reduction to improve their appearance, others seek surgeries that will help them shed unwanted pounds. A new procedure that’s not approved in the U.S. is causing some Americans to cross borders, but some doctors question its efficacy and safety, according to the New York Times.
The intragastric balloon is a liquid-filled, balloon-like device that is inserted into the stomach via the esophagus for a short period of time (around six months) to aid in weight loss. This is a viable weight loss option for lighter individuals who may not be candidates for other forms of bariatric surgery. And, although the procedure is not performed in the U.S., it is popular in Canada, Europe and South America for those who need to lose less than 50 pounds. It may eventually become available stateside, as trials with the Food and Drug Administration are in their early states, the Times reports.
However, it seems for some Americans, the procedure can’t come soon enough. Some patients have opted to go north to have the procedure performed by Canadian doctors. American patients account for about a third of those seeking intragastric balloons in Canada.
“Studies of the balloon have reported weight loss ranging from 13 to 34 pounds on average, with some individuals losing up to 50 pounds,” the newspaper reported. “Patients often gain weight again after the device is removed, though long-term studies are limited.”
Individuals who lose weight due to an intragastric balloon need to make lifestyle changes to maintain the results. Changes in diet and exercise habits are crucial for those looking to lose weight and keep excess pounds off, according to the news outlet.
Much like medical tourism for plastic surgery, getting surgery abroad makes follow-up checkups difficult if not impossible. Being close to your surgeon and making regular visits is crucial to the success of a surgery as well as preventing any dangerous complications.

Riding a bicycle is more than a fun and healthy family activity. Besides being great way to exercise, many people also use bicycles to commute to work, go to the grocery store, or to visit friends and family. Some people use them as their primary mode of transportation.
With summer fast approaching, it’s a good idea to review some of the basic safety rules of riding a bicycle. That way, you can minimize your chances of getting into an accident. After all, May is Bicycle Safety Month!
Prepping Your Bicycle
In the U.S., more than 50,000 bicyclists were injured in 2009 and 630 died from accidents with vehicles, according to the latest figures by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Before you go on a bike ride, make sure to:
- Always use a helmet, regardless of your age.
- Use a bicycle that’s the right size for you so that you will be able to control it properly.
- Make sure the brakes are working and the tires are inflated to the correct pressure.
- Make yourself visible to motorists by wearing bright colors like red or yellow.
- Get rear and front lights that are very bright or flash to increase your visibility.
- Avoid riding your bicycle at night.
NHTSA has additional resources on bicycle safety, including how to fit your bike helmet (PDF format).
Rules for Riding a Bicycle on the Street
Bicycles are considered vehicles, so cyclists are expected to follow the same traffic rules as car drivers. When you are on the road:
- Obey all traffic laws, including stoplights, signs, signals and lane markings.
- Yield to pedestrians.
- Ride your bicycle in the same direction as traffic, never against it.
- Signal when you make turns.
- Be careful near parked cars as someone might suddenly open the door.
NHTSA has a parent pledge (PDF format) as well as a child pledge (PDF format) to help promote responsible bicycling.
Rules for Riding a Bicycle on the Sidewalk
The street, especially where there are bike lanes, is the best place to ride a bicycle. However, the sidewalk might be safer for children under 10 years old who are unable to ride their bicycles on the street without adult supervision.
Before riding your bicycle on the sidewalk, make sure it’s allowed by local and state authorities. If you do ride your bike on the sidewalk:
- Be careful with cars coming in and out of driveways.
- Alert pedestrians when you’re close to them by saying “passing you on your left” or by using a bell horn.
- Stop at all intersections before crossing the street.
For more information visit the NHTSA’s bicycle safety page.

Plastic surgery’s link to psychology
A recent study presented at the 30th Anniversary Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) finds that individuals who undergo various plastic surgery procedures enjoy a positive psychological effect, improved quality of life and increased perceptions of well-being.
“The purpose of cosmetic surgery is to improve a person’s psychological functioning by modifying their body image,” said plastic surgeon Dr. Gregory Borah, author of a 1997 study on the effects of plastic surgery. “This prospective study is important because it demonstrates that objective measurements of a patient’s quality of life are improved after cosmetic surgery.”
According to ASAPS, the study involved 105 cosmetic plastic surgery patients between the ages of 18 and 70. Researchers found that most participants experienced positive effects, such as increased quality of life, following their procedures.
However, experts warn that while many people choose plastic surgery to discreetly improve their appearance, drastic changes can be shocking to some. A recent article on Buzzfeed.com examines those who have issues with their identity after drastic plastic surgery, like Heidi Montag, who many believe has body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). This psychological condition is a “red flag” for plastic surgeons who screen patients to make sure they are not having surgery to become a different person or make a perfect image.
One plastic surgeon from New York screens patients for psychological disorders and if he suspects a problem, refers them to a psychiatrist. Although “most surgeons are increasingly aware of a need for psychological screening,” experts warn, “there are unscrupulous people in every field.”
Sociologists and therapists suggest that cosmetic changes over the course of many years might be an easier adjustment than extreme plastic surgery. A person’s identity forms at adolescence and major changes could cause a shock. As always, it is best to consult with board-certified plastic surgeons while considering cosmetic surgery to make the best choice for you.

Silicone breast implants, invented in 1962, soldier on. Though they provide a smooth profile, they’ve had a bumpy path. The sixties bought a clamor for them. Then, because of complications, the nineties bought a clamor against them. Of these silicone devices, Wmag.com, May 2012, reports, “Now they are back: bigger, safer, and more popular than ever.” In fact, the FDA recently approved a new silicone breast implant manufactured by Sientra.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that last year 316,848 breast augmentations were performed in the United States. Call it a fashion choice or a definer of femininity, the enhanced bosom doesn’t seem to be going away. So it makes perfect sense for Wmag.com to ask the question, “How did so many women become so interested in having a bigger bosom than nature intended?”
Victoria Pitts-Taylor, for one, director of the Center for the Study of Women and Society at the City University of New York, blames it on the media and “women feeling they must compete with what is essentially a pornographic aesthetic.”
There was a time when large breasts were, for the most part, considered a burden. If you did want to enhance your breast size, there was a fear about implant materials. In fact, in the early 20th century, Wmag.com reports that surgeons tried fillers like glass and ivory balls, peanut oil, goat’s milk ox cartilage, honey and paraffin. With the plastics revolution, Teflon, nylon and Plexiglas were thrown into the mix.
The breast really came into its own with the Hollywood bombshells. Blondes, like Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield, flooded the newsstands and their big-busted sisters, like Rita Hayworth and Jane Russell, came close on their heels. Wmag.com reports that in 1964, Carol Doda, who pioneered topless go-go dancing, underwent dozens of silicone injections and this technique became de rigeur on the burlesque circuit. However, injected as such, silicone tended to migrate, bunch up or turn rock solid.
After tremendous advances in surgical breast augmentation techniques, resulting in fewer infections and a significant reduction in hardening, the question is, “Will silicone breast implants be around to celebrate their 100th birthday?” Wmag.com reports, “Probably not.” Now doctors are working with fat cells that can be transplanted into breasts. A former plastic surgeon who was a resident during the first 1962 silicone breast augmentation says, “The future is fat.” Whether its paraffin, silicone, saline, or your own fat, it doesn’t look like breast augmentation is going out of style.

A ceremony was held in Promontory Summit, Utah, about 35 miles away from where the railroad was joined together by the “Golden Spike,” which finally connected the two sides of the railroad, marking its completion. The National Park Service now operates the Golden Spike Historical Site in Promontory Point, Utah.
